The GAP in Brno
Šujanová, Radka ; Němec, Roman (referee) ; Nový, Vítězslav (advisor)
The task of the bachelor's thesis was to design a suitable structure for our chosen gap. My design deals with a gap on Sladová Street. Quite an unattractive location is hidden behind Mendel Square, but which is a great shortcut to Špilberk Castle. Nowadays, the gap is ugly, overgrown and fenced with corrugated iron, on which some "artists" decorated with their thought of art. The analyses I performed last semester showed that the plots never had a building on them. In addition, there is an exploration tunnel of the tram line. An insight into the zoning plan revealed that the tram line below Špilberk is still being considered, so I had to adapt the proposal to this fact. So, my design is a multifunctional house, which is mostly residential. I incorporated the tunnel into the house by basically making it an attraction for the public as part of a large cafe with an underground bar and club. The benefit of the design for the site should be to make the street more attractive, to fill an unsightly gap and to create new living spaces near the centre.

The aim of the proposal was to solve the development of an urban area on the corner of Nové sady and Úzká streets in the vicinity of the historic city center. In the design, I tried to create a large number of interior spaces with views of the surroundings, especially the main landmarks of the city such as Petrov and Špilberk. At the same time, a high dynamic building is created, which is the dominant feature and the jewel of the corner. The concept should bring to the locality not only the cultivation of the territory, but also the opening of space from the surrounding streets and the area in front of Little America thanks to the open parterre, which allows the entire town hall building to pass. Due to the easy walking distance from the city center, quality amenities, a large number of public transport stops, employees and visitors do not necessarily use the city office to transport cars, but in my proposal I count on underground parking under the city hall. I conceived the whole design as an effort to create a Brno jewel, which will not be a barrier but a connection of the surrounding streets.

How will we live together?

The aim of the thesis is to propose a solution for build-up area on a land in a currently neglected and uncultivated precint of a former sugar refinery of Šlapanice, extending between the streets Nádražní and Dlouhá near the centre of this smaller town. The design of urbanism of the place comes from the prethesis project. The whole land is approached as most penetrable, and above all for walkers. Automobile transport is slowed down by the indirect course of roads, which emanate through the precint, that, as a whole, is conceived as living zone. Thus, emphasis is placed on on amiability of the place, pleasant scale of buildings freely distributed on a whole land, which per se is a large park serving as a space for meeting. Respect towards to existence of nature, as an important and unavoidable constituent all around us, is intensified by the line-up of the precint to passing river Říčka along the east border of the estate. I have tried to approach the desing itself as a most beneficial not only fur human beings, but also for the animals and nature per se, which deserve a sufficient space and respect. It is the effort and connection of the nature and people, which accompanies the whole design, in which not only the variability of objects as currently needed, ecological, economical, readily and fast construction are intended, but above all to learn to handle energy and food sources, to value their price and to know the cycle, which stands behind their obtaining.

The aim of the design plan was to solve the development of an uninhabited and uncultivated area on the corner of Nové sady and Úzká streets in close proximity to the historic city center. Due to the creation of a public space and at the same time sufficient sunshine insolation, the space was divided by a passage into a smaller and a larger part. I tried to incorporate a large amount of greenery into the design not only by continuing in the existing alley of trees in Nové sady Street and establishing a new tree line on the opposite side, but also by adding greenery to both masses of the buildings and creating a green inner courtyard with relaxing zones. The concept should bring the locality a total revitalization, culture and access to the area in front of Malá Amerika directly from Nové sady Street, which will connect the two areas and thus not create a square as a nook. Thanks to the easy accessibility to the center, sufficient facilities, the possibility of jobs and cultural activities, the tenants of the apartment building and employee of the office do not necessarily have to use cars for transport. On the ground floor, therefore, I want to include bicycle stands for town hall visitors. In the apartment building I am considering a small station for charging e-bikes accessible from a covered public space and in the basement with facilities for storing the bikes of the residents themselves. I tried to view the whole design as environmentally friendly, with minimum built-up areas and hard surfaces, the creation of new areas of urban greenery and, above all, the most accessible to the citizens of the city.

The aim of the design is to revitalize the area lined by the streets of Nové sady, Úzká, and the Malá Amerika building. This uncultivated place is located quite near to the city center. During the design, the main focus was placed on the potential of the defined area. The new buildings recreate the city block, which is partially opened at the top of the area. In the upper corner of the plot is dominated by the rotating town hall tower. The lower floors of the town hall building are receding backward for the necessity to create a public space under the building, due to a road barrier directly in front of the city hall. The concept of the town hall and the completion of the city block enlivens the locality, brings there new functions, culture, and safety. The proposal counts on planting and recultivating new greenery towards the Malá Amerika building. The whole design thus seeks significantly integrate the new complex with the lowest load on the environment.
